Hutt St Centre’s vision is an end to homelessness. Our mission is to advocate with and empower people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, supporting them to rebuild their lives on their journey to homefulness.

How you will make a difference

As our Sous Chef, you will be the heart of our kitchen, assisting in designing nutritious menus, managing food safety standards and leading our team of volunteers. We aren’t just looking for culinary skills; we need an empathetic person who can create a welcoming environment for people facing hardship.

 

This role is offered on a permanent part time basis working 3 days per week 6am – 2pm.

Key Responsibilities

Assisting with:

  • Menu Planning: Create balanced, nutritious, and appealing menus utilising donated goods and fresh produce.
  • Food Safety: Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Volunteer Management: Train, roster, and inspire a team of kitchen volunteers.
  • Inventory Control: Manage food storage, monitor inventory, and minimise waste.
  • Community Focus: Foster a warm, inclusive, and judgment-free atmosphere for all clients.
  • Covering leave in the absence of the Head Chef

About you

  • Proven experience as a Chef, Cook, or Kitchen Manager (qualification/Certificate III in Commercial Cookery is a plus).
  • Ability to “think on your feet” and create great meals based on daily ingredient donations.
  • A genuine desire to support and uplift people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to oversee a busy kitchen environment.
  • You have or are willing to obtain a Working with Children Clearance / National Police Clearance

You must have,or be willing to obtain both a satisfactory National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check.
