Key Duties and Responsibilities

The role of a Police Officer in General Duties involves a broad spectrum of responsibilities. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate skills and experience related to the following core areas:

Operational Policing and Law Enforcement

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service (e.g., domestic disputes, motor vehicle accidents, armed robberies, assaults, and critical incidents) as a first responder.

  • Investigate and prosecute criminal offences by gathering facts, securing and examining crime scenes, collecting evidence, and interviewing victims, witnesses, and offenders.

  • Apprehend offenders for various crimes, from minor traffic infringements to serious and indictable offences, maintaining public order and safety.

  • Enforce traffic law and conduct high-visibility policing patrols in diverse locations (urban, rural, transport networks).

  • Use, maintain, and account for issued equipment including firearms, vehicles, and communication gear in accordance with policy and procedure.

Community Safety and Engagement

  • Maintain public order and safety by proactively patrolling areas and responding to incidents that affect community well-being.

  • Provide advice and assistance to victims of crime and their families, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy.

  • Engage with diverse community members to build trust, resolve disputes, and address community safety concerns (e.g., anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol-affected people).

  • Operate effectively under pressure and exercise sound judgement, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills in volatile situations.

  • Support planned operations and ad hoc incidents, including providing assistance during natural disasters (e.g., floods, bushfires).

Administration, Reporting, and Legal Process

  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports, briefs of evidence, and statements (e.g., incident reports, diary entries, correspondence) to support operational tasks and investigations.

  • Maintain and update Police databases and records of activity to ensure integrity of information.

  • Prepare and give evidence in person in court proceedings (Local Court, Children's Court, Coroner's Court) when required, maintaining a high standard of professionalism and ethical conduct.
